Responding to the Call
In a personal show of support for our Muslim neighbors last week, a small handful of SUMC members answered a call from our Social Justice commission to meet at the Boston area Muslin Center in Wayland. We arrived carrying signs, and this served as a reminder that we’re still committed to equal justice for all. It was a heart-warming experience, as numerous members of that thriving congregation expressed deep appreciation for our presence. It was worth doing. Pastor Joel was among us.
The experience was a stark reminder of how much fear is being generated by the actions of our newly-installed national leaders. And it also reminded me personally of what a former pastor in California told me years ago, after he joined the famous civil rights march in Selma, Alabama: “I had to put my money where my mouth is.”
Let’s keep it up,
