The Youth Group’s First Annual Master Chef and Kitchen Disaster sure lived up to its billing! Sixteen chefs and chef-ettes (including 4 visitors) took over the SUMC kitchen Sunday night in an effort to wow the four celebrity judges (Pastor Joel, Dennis O’Malley, Alexandra Plotkin and Brad Wood). Three teams competed for the coveted first prize of Frozen Yogurt gift cards (the staff is still trying to determine if the yogurt or the coveting is more sinful?!?!). It was interesting to watch how the respective group’s menu of Miso Soup, Chicken, Shrimp and Vegetable Stir Fry and Pudding with a Purpose was constructed (or in one case, destructed!). Harvard Biz School has already inquired about developing a case study on what (and what not) to do in a kitchen teamwork situation.

  • Judge O’Malley summed up the experience quite aptly with the following assessment:
    Group One – Tasty, well-seasoned and extremely edible (except the shrimp shell). Congrats, Ladies!
  • Group Three – Great presentation, loved the soup and you may have a chef in the group. Congrats, gentlemen!
  • Group Two – Creative, different and questionable. Please keep out of the kitchen!

The final tally showed Group one in first place, Group Three a close second, and Group Two a distance sixth place!

    Desserts from groups 1 and 2 were quite good. Chocolate pudding was delish! and the presentation of the butterscotch pudding was professional.
